Doll snaps?
« on: March 11, 2013, 05:31:43 PM »
Hi there!
For a long time I was convinced 5mm (1/4") sew-on snaps are the smallest snaps available... until I saw a post on http://www.toyboxphilosopher.com/ that described some 12" Tonner doll (sorry, I can't find it). The clothes had incredibly tiny snaps. That made me wonder - what is the size situation for snaps? Google revealed the smallest is 4/0, but I couldn't find what this means. Some sources say 5mm is size 2/0, but others say 4/0 are also 5mm. Can anyone clear the mystery for me - put an actual ruler against Tonner clothes snaps? Please?

And while we are on the subject, what are your favourite places to buy small snaps?
I was born in the Soviet Union - art supplies are hard to find here so please keep it simple with me!

Hopefully this will help you - http://sewtrue.com/Store/Sew-On-Snaps-Single-Card-P2622.html - it lists the dimensions of different size snaps. 3/16" is just under 5mm

I have one tonner outfit, but it's the one for 16" dolls, the snaps are around 5 or 6mm:

(It's from the Elizabeth Swan doll, I dyed it darker.)

I buy snaps here in craft stores and places that sell fabric, buttons, and thread. I used to find the 5mm, but now I can only find the bigger ones.. :concern:

Thank you guys! It's really hard to imagine the size of these without a ruler next to them.

Curious thing: my snaps were labeled 5mm, and they are transparent and flat, which makes them pretty much invisible. I never bothered to measure them because they are so delicate, they look like they should be 5mm. Turns out they are 7! Now I see why they take half the width of a MH body!

I saw these Dritz snaps that Haffina linked, except the measurements weren't listed anywhere. Now I'll have to look into online stores with friendly shipping rates. The smallest snaps around are also 7mm, I used to buy them when I was a kid, but now I find them too bulky for Barbie.

I'll return with store links if I find anything interesting.

Update: I bought Dritz snaps 4/0 from ebay, I don't have them now, but my friend sent me this picture: (it's from gmail, I hope you can see it)

They are next to 1/16 eyelets from eyeletoutlet, which are about 3mm across. They seem a lot bigger than 5mm.
